![]() Woodall’s strength lies in the art’s vibrant color palette, distinctly designed characters, and energetic paneling. ![]() ![]() But while their class routines and lives feel monotonous, an intriguing scientific discovery shakes up their dreary lunar existence. Together, they make up the Planet Stompers, one of the many constantly feuding groups within the school, which includes the Hell Bats and the rumored to exist Trash Queens. Now, in 2115, Mars is reserved for the rich and elite, while the moon houses underprivileged youth, including Una, a Black tech-minded transfer student from the Mars Technical Institute Asian-cued Yuki, an athlete who lived on Earth up until two years ago and white perpetually-in-detention Stab, the trio’s loose cannon. ![]() In 2091, when Earth shows signs that it can no longer support human life, Planet X Co., formed by the “brave and caring leaders of Earth,” colonize the moon and Mars for planetary relocation. ![]() ![]() I found it gorgeously written conveying complex ideas in accessible ways. This is the second book I’ve read on Shinto. As far as that, this book met and exceeded by expectations. Elements of Shinto tie into entertainment I enjoy from Japan and I wanted to learn more from a religious perspective. My reasons for reading this book were purely secular. And, although the introductory chapters may read as preachy the later ones strongly advise caution in worship (separating one's desire to be communicating with spirits from the innate creative elements of the human mind) and also returns to the notion that although aspects of Shinto may have universal truth, the application of them should have context to the culture practicing them. He provides insight into prayer and meditation techniques. Within that structure he dissects words to get to the core of their meaning. ![]() In that sense it is heavy on the religion and philosophy, making statements of belief as truth. I think it is written by a true believer who wants to translate for the public the core elements of his belief system. ![]() However, I disagree that the entire book is preachy. This is absolutely a book written by a religious practitioner rather than a secular scholar. Not so much because any of the low star reviews are incorrect about some tonal elements but because I would have missed out on some very interesting translations (language and cultural). ![]() Well, first of all, I am glad I didn't read the goodreads reviews prior to picking up this book. ![]() ![]() ![]() So first the language: appealing to historical linguistics, Anthony discusses how Proto-Indo-European has been reconstructed. At the very least cultures from the US to India to China to Iran and Russia can trace concepts and words back to these people living on the steppes 6000 years ago. ![]() The overarching theme of the book is that the Eurasian Steppes (roughly the areas of modern-day Ukraine and Kazakhstan near the Black and Caspian Seas) is the source for not just the languages that large portions of the world speaks, but also of important aspects of European and Asian cultures. This is important material for grounding the argument he is making, but it wasn’t what I was ultimately reading the book for (I admit to skimming through the more detailed descriptions of pottery and their dating). There are dozens of dozens of pages detailing archaeology sites and finds, including pottery and burial descriptions. And deeper it is! Anthony’s book, though quite readable, is a scholarly work of archaeology. Those episodes fascinated me so I got Anthony’s book to dive deeper into it. ![]() One of his main sources was David Anthony’s The Horse, The Wheel, and Language. Stroud starts his history thousands of years before English appears one the scene by starting with the history of Proto-Indo-European. I came to this book through The History of English podcast, hosted by Kevin Stroud. The Horse, the Wheel, and Language: How Bronze-Age Riders from the Eurasian Steppes Shaped the Modern World by David W. ![]() ![]() ![]() As the planes returned there was always the worry that they would jettison their bombs over their village. ![]() Elizabeth and her Mother were living at that time in Marldon, a small village on the flight path to Plymouth, and endured many nights of sleepless listening as the German planes roared overhead on their way to bomb Plymouth. It took her a long time to write, a project that she took up and laid aside during the early days of the Second World War. His story is William’s in most particulars.Įlizabeth herself said she “made it New Zealand because my ignorance of Australia was, even more, total than my ignorance of New Zealand.” The book is based on the life experiences of Elizbeth’s Great Uncle William, who left the island to join the British Navy, went on shore leave at an eastern port, missed his ship after “getting into a scrape” and found a ship bound for Australia. And in real life also the man held his tongue about his mistake and made a good job of his marriage.” That a man who had emigrated to the New World should after a lapse of years write home for a bride, and then get the wrong one because he had confused her name with that of her sister, may seem to the reader highly improbable yet it happened. ![]() “Though this book is fiction, and the characters, not portraits, it is based on fact. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What Should I Read Next? - Here is a list of the majority of King's books ranked by Barnes and Noble.Any abusive, trolling, derogatory or threatening comments are strictly prohibited. Why would a god send a dream instead of a command?.The Trojans amass and exit their gates for battle, and we learn where they’re from, and their leaders. Zeus sends goddess Iris to warn Hector of Troy. They amass, minus Achilles and his men, and we’re told of who they are, where they’re from, their leaders, and how many ships they brought. Odysseus and Nestor convince the men to stay, then Agamemnon convinces them to get ready for battle. Odysseus bops a dude who wouldn’t shut up and was insulting Agamemnon. Reverse psychology?
